Care

Potting mix

  • Heart-leaf philodendron cuttings in watertight aluminium pots made about half the shoot growth of cuttings in clay or peat pots over 16 weeks (7.0 against 13.4–13.7 cm); the authors point to poorer aeration and drainage.

Feeding

  • Heart-leaf philodendron in 15-cm pots fed 4.8–7.2 g Osmocote 19-6-12 per 3 months graded 4.4–4.6 of 5 in the glasshouse; plant and root grades fell as the rate rose further, to 3.4 and 3.1 at 24 g.

    B IndirectMeasured on this species

  • In solution culture at 274 µmol, tripling the nitrogen concentration (5 to 15 meq/L) gave heart-leaf philodendron no extra growth (dry weight 4.6–5.2 g).

Propagation

  • In a winter glasshouse, keeping the rooting medium at 24 °C or warmer raised the rooting grade of heart-leaf philodendron cuttings after 7 weeks from 2.1 to 2.8 on a 1–4 scale.

A Measured directlyMeasured on this species

  • Dipping heart-leaf philodendron cuttings in IBA or NAA left the share that rooted unchanged (86–91 % against 86 % undipped); IBA at 0.5 g/L gave longer roots after four months (13 against 7 cm).

A Measured directlyMeasured on this species

  • Sticking 10 or 15 tip cuttings of 'Frilly Philly' per 0.6-L pot instead of 5 gave fuller, better-rated pots after 12 weeks (quality 4.3–4.8 against 2.1 of 5).
