Care

Potting mix

  • Replacing 20 % of the peat in a peat–perlite mix with biochar plus compost raised the air-filled pore space from 9 to 16 % and gave larger plants within four months (30 against 20 leaves).

Feeding

  • In 'White Butterfly' in a summer glasshouse (about 150 µmol at most), more fertiliser gave consistently whiter leaves.

  • 'Pink Allusion' in 15-cm pots graded 3.6, 3.9 and 4.1 of 5 at 4, 8 and 12 g Osmocote 19-6-12 per pot; height stayed the same.

Propagation

  • Of 67 plants raised by stem cuttings from variegated 'Variegata' stock, 52 kept the mottled pattern, 13 turned green and 2 white; green shoots stayed green in every later propagation.

Form hints

  • Grown at 200 instead of 700 µmol/m²/s, plants were whiter, with larger but fewer leaves.
